Summary: In the past decade important new developments have brought about fundamental changes in the desig of industrial buildings and factories. The growth of automation has made functional demands, which in turn require new architectural soltions--loose arrangements of toplit workshops have to a large measure given way to closely-knit, compact but flexible buildings, equippped with artificcial lighting. Now, much more thought is being given to the integration of industiral buildings with their setting. These developments are illustrated in the international selection of buildings chosen for this book. It begins by medium-sized american and European factories which are of special interest because they solved specific functional and constructional problems. The final section consists of a survey embracing a number of notable concrete stgructures in Italy, some important new plants in the developing countries, interesting Japanese buildings. Apart from photographs every project is fully documented with site plans and drawings in plan and section; details and production flows are illustrated to make particular points and the technical informaiton is further augmented. A lenghty introduction gives an overall view of the basic tendencies of modern industrial bulding and their place in architecture as a whole
