Summary: This book grew out of a talk, Modern architecture: towards a redefinition of style. The text, therefore does not pretend to present a full history of modern architecture, since much, including almost all city planning, had to be rigorously excluded from it, but it does attempt define that architectures historical dimensions, to evaluate its meaning in terms of modern life, and to trace major developments which has taken place in it. The conclusions arising from such an essay can never be final ones. It is hoped, instead, that the illustrations as organized here, and the text as it relates to them, may suggest further perceptions and lines of thought in what is, after all, the unending attempt to define ourselves and our place in the world in which we, as a modern men, are all engaged.
