Summary: The present volume is the fifth of the series and contains 96 specially drawn scale-drawings and about 120 photographs. The reason for the constant demand for these bound volumes of detail sheets is not hard to seek. They illustrate the work of some of the worlds leading architects and give examples of their contemporary designs throughout the world. These detail sheets are a means of encouraging a careful study of recent trends of detailing in modern buildings; this is necessary to ensure serviceable and economic buildings which both are attractive appearance and require the minimum of day-to-day maintenance. With the rapid development of new building techniques and new materials, the designer can no longer rely upon traditional solutions to day-to-day problems of building construction. In many cases original solutions have been found, and the experience of other architects is always of value to the practising designer as a reference to which he can turn when faced with a similar situation. The grouping of the detail sheets follows the pattern of previous volumes with selections on Balconies, Entrances and Doors, Furniture and Fittings, Fireplaces, Roofs and Ceilings, Staircases, Wall detail, Windows, and Miscellaneous detailing. The international glossary of terms, which have proved so helpful to architects and students overseas, has again been included.
