After serving in the Finnish war of national liberation in 1919, he attended the technical school in Helsinki and was graduated as an architect in 1921. He set up his own office two years later. His first great success, won in a competition, was the turberculosis sanatorium at Paimio, built in 1928, which established him as one of the foremost modern architects. .
